Vast, magnificent and wild; the sea holds a world of potential. Many of us are drawn to the restorative powers of fresh sea air, a dip in bracing waters or the sounds of waves crashing on the shore. Could we also be thanking the sea for providing us with radiant, hydrated skin?
In celebration of World Oceans Day (8 June), Organic House explores the potential of marine algae in organic skincare.
Why Use Marine Algae in Natural Skincare Products?
Over the past decade, there has been a shift away from synthetic cosmetic products in favour of natural, organic ingredients. Cosmetic innovators have explored the bioactive potential of plants as a means of providing safe, effective facial moisturisers, serums and cleansers.
In our ‘Grow your Own Skincare’ article, we explored the natural skincare benefits of terrestrial plants, yet there are many other plants in the world’s oceans. Tests on a handful of the 30,000 species of marine algae have shown that they are rich in antioxidants and vitamins.
Red, green and brown macro and micro-algae contain compounds and vitamins that moisturise the skin and inhibit the enzymes that break down collagen. Rich in antioxidants, they can neutralise the effects of pollution, detox pore and reduce inflammation.
Marine algae have a beneficial impact on all skin types and have even proved effective at calming skin conditions including psoriasis. An in-depth study of ‘ Seaweed as Source of Bioactive Substances and Skin Care Therapy’ details the specific skincare attributes of various species of marine algae. Like a dip in the ocean, applying this natural ingredient can invigorate and heal.
In the Organic House Skin Care range, our Lift and Firm Moisturiser includes marine algae. This is balanced with Shea and Cocoa butter, Hyaluronic acid and Siberian Ginseng for deeply hydrating and uplifting skin treatment.
“I absolutely adore this moisturiser. It feels wonderful and light on my skin. I have also noticed my skin feels much more hydrated since using this product. Couldn’t be happier to have found Organic House Products! Highly recommend.”
Looking to the Sea for Health Benefits
The concept of utilising the sea as part of skincare and beauty routines is nothing new. Thalassotherapy has long been used in Ireland, France and many Mediterranean countries as a spa treatment. It champions the cleansing powers of seawater and seaweed to treat and enhance the complexion.
Japanese and Korean cultures led the way in incorporating the health benefits of seaweed in the diet. The antioxidants and vitamins that lift and brighten the skin also keep us healthy from the inside.
In Victorian times, a trip to the seaside was associated with recuperation rather than holidays. Simply breathing in the fresh sea air has curative properties which help to reduce the effects of hay fever and chest infections. If you are willing to brave a swim in the sea, it is great exercise and is known to improve circulation and boost immunity. Will you be daring on your next trip to the coast?
Is Marine Algae for Skin Care Sustainably Sourced?
Those of us who favour organic skincare want to know that the natural ingredients are sustainably sourced. Is this the case for the harvesting of marine plants?
At present, there is an abundant supply of marine algae. It grows near the shore in every ocean and ecosystem. As these sea plants grow, they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, so they help us to breathe.
In line with this year’s theme for #WorldOceansDay, ‘Life and Livelihood’, protecting the oceans is crucial for maintaining the abundant supply of algae. Controlled extraction and sustainable cultivation are essential for the sustainability of natural resources. If we want to benefit from naturally derived alternatives to synthetic products, respecting and caring for our seas is critical.
Organic House is a climate positive company. We source eco-marine algae that are harvested with respect to the environment. As a product that can heal and strengthen the skin, whilst restoring its subtleness and radiance, we want to ensure a long-lasting supply.
As one threat to our oceans is plastic waste, we use recyclable glass jars for our Lift & Firm Moisturiser and other organic skincare products.
On World Oceans Day, let’s give thanks to the powerful beauty of the sea and the resources it provides.
